Songwriting 109: I Strike the Lightening You Sound the Thunder

another busted evening
another useless fight
both of us can’t be wrong
neither one is right

you take the high road
i settle on the low
cryin’ and a drivin’
to interrput our flow

there’s always clouds a formin’
the storms we shelter under
i strike the lightening
you sound the thunder

silent hollerin’ fills the room
forgettin’ what we’ve said
miles and miles between us
as we lie awake in bed

tossin’ and turnin’
sleep will never come
wheels spinnin’ in my mind
this is just plain dumb

there’s always clouds a formin’
the storms we shelter under
i strike the lightening
you sound the thunder

sorry’s so elusive
seldom is it heard
in vain we both try to find
any encouraging word

your pretty face makes it melt
my heart rests in your hands
lightening surely can’t strike twice
right there where you stand

there’s sun on the horizon
the light we shelter under
you calm my lightening
i steal your thunder

Songwriting 108: Spun Around (Our Song)

love is a tide, a river of emotion
it starts as a creek that grows to an ocean
ours is a harmony, our own surreal song
it’s twice beautiful and twice long

binding us together and built to last
the future of our love rooted in the past
our selves struggling side by side
tangled souls, love’s rules abide

spun around, spun around
lost in love but now found
turn that hourglass upside down
spun around, spun around
old love’s familiar sound
now and forever we are bound

our memories carried me away
to a different place, a different day
a boundary of many years
marked by loss and sealed with tears

i felt it when i saw you again
feelin’ like it did back back then
a pretty face stopped me on a dime
our love endured the test of time

spun around, spun around
lost in love but now found
turn that hourglass upside down
spun around, spun around
old love’s familiar sound
now and forever we are bound

the moon yet risen on our love
the sun still shining from above
fanning embers once thought lost
for flames of love, we paid the cost

i took your hand and you took mine
eternal sands forever fine
poised at the ocean where we once met
we dove in, we got wet

spun around, spun around
lost in love but now found
turn that hourglass upside down
spun around, spun around
old love’s familiar sound
now and forever we are bound

spun around, spun around…

Songwriting 107: Music Made Me Who I Am

juice newton raised me
j. giles crazed me
in the glory days of springsteen
i was thirteen
dazzled by top 40’s sheen

the ‘seagulls were flockin’
the ‘heads were talkin’
music made me a slave
it was the high tide i’d crave
catchin’ a new wave

don’t remember when it came along
everything explained in a song
wisdom from books, i didn’t give a damn
it was music, made me who i am

it was a rhapsody that found me queen
synthesizing boston was never seen
peaceful easy feelings i’d unlock
at seventeen turnin’ back the clock
rediscovering like a classic rock

when i came around the day was green
american music from violent new scene
my world had turned and left me here
without a trace of my old soul in the mirror
an alternative vision in twenty-first year

don’t remember when it came along
everything explained in a song
wisdom from books, i didn’t give a damn
it was music, made me who i am

creedence souled me
heart stole me
joel didn’t start my fire, but he fanned the flame
the journey changed me
floyd deranged me
a musical revolution altered who i became

Songwriting 106: Can’t See Through All the Crazy

missing our heat in my bed
thoughts racing through my head
nomads in the night
avoidin’ another fight

it’s the cost of love
you pay it beyond and above
being lonely and pristine
a quiet night
a loner’s plight
a king needs his queen

i’ll talk to you
we’ll work it though
if it gets me past the hazy
can’t see through all the crazy

you never take my side
my feelings try to hide
form your anger and fatigue
but i look at you
what do i do
you’re out of my league

you’re my savior and muse
i’m the ignition for your fuse
we just can’t keep on walkin’ away
i need your love, each and every day

i’ll talk to you
we’ll work it though
if it gets me past the hazy
can’t see through all the crazy

can’t see through all the crazy
can’t see through all the crazy
can’t see through all the crazy

Songwriting 105: Babe, You Can Keep the Change

you saw me on the dance floor
I bummed a cigarette
you made a first impression
I still can’t shake it yet
for you I fell just like the rain
there’s magic in those eyes
but you wanted a certain type
so I donned my disguise

keep the change keep the change
babe, I’ve been here before
keep the change keep the change
babe, I’ll show myself the door
this life that we’ve been livin’
Is feelin’ pretty strange
I’m going back to being me
babe, You can keep the change

we played at life together
you made me into a new girl
we shared your hopes and dreams
I gave them a whirl
we never danced as partners
you framed me on your shelf
while we pretended at perfection
I was only losing myself

keep the change keep the change
babe, I’ve been here before
keep the change keep the change
babe, I’ll show myself the door
this life that we’ve been livin’
Is feelin’ pretty strange
I’m going back to being me
babe, You can keep the change

our reality became your dreams
I lost all track of mine
you were lovin’ that mirror girl
I never liked being your shrine
our union was a fairytale
that only I could see
your vision was too blurred
by some other version of me

keep the change keep the change
babe, I’ve been here before
keep the change keep the change
babe, I’ll show myself the door
this life that we’ve been livin’
Is feelin’ pretty strange
I’m going back to being me
babe, You can keep the change

keep the change keep the change…

Songwriting 104: Negotiating Our Surrender

always the same old story
same old endless fights
dreaming dominates the days
waning rules the nights

promises thrown at the wall
words I’ve said before
future in familiar fog
lonely at the core

I was the great Houdini
you were always the great pretender
drawing up our battle lines
negotiating our surrender

lust flowing  out of anger
marking time that passed
keep hanging on for dear love
if it’s meant to last

we’ve failed too many times
our dreams should’ve died
our ghosts would haunt each other
binds forever tied

I was the great Houdini
you were always the great pretender
drawing up our battles lines
negotiating our surrender

only falling backward once
stepping forward twice
keeping closeness at arm’s length
ain’t worth the sacrifice

the eggshells all long broken
sleeved hearts in our hands
forging paths toward crossroads
trading golden bands

no more the great Houdini
you’re reign over as the great pretender
dissolving our battles lines
negotiated our surrender

Songwriting 103: Built to Last

she called it a night
I felt her letting go
our future in familiar haze
from a long long time ago

speechless words unspoken
vanished in moon light
same old silent words
same old endless fight

but we forged a union
from the present to the past
stronger than either end
prone to falter
but
built to last

tossing baggage through the door
emotions buried deep
same old lines repeated
same old price too steep

you see your triumphs north
she sees your triumphs south
you can check your pride at the door
you can also check your mouth

but we forged a union
from the present to the past
stronger than either end
prone to falter
but
built to last

holding things together
fearing time alone
sweeping life aside
hearts of fire
hearts of stone

shorelines of darkness
horizons of fear
mountains of emptiness
wishing you were here

but we forged a union
from the present to the past
stronger than either end
prone to falter
but
built to last

prone to falter
but
built to last

prone to falter
but
built to last
